Vintage Video - Emperor Franz Josef I, 1914

Emperor Franz Josef I reigned as Austro-Hungarian monarch from 1848 until his death in 1916, by which time the Austro-Hungarian empire was fast crumbling.

Indeed by the time of his passing he knew that Austria-Hungary's fate was almost certainly doomed. With the war lost two years later - with Karl I as Emperor - the empire rapidly dissolved.

Use the player above to view film footage of Franz Josef taken before the First World War began in 1914.

3 British Officers were executed by courts martial during the war, as opposed to 316 Private soldiers and 24 Non-Commissioned Officers.  The vast majority were for desertions.
